A few of the more… notable people you may encounter in the library.
Professor Henry "Nitrate" Norton
Nitrate Norton, in a rare moment of noncombustion. |
---|
Professor Norton, "Nitrate" to his friends, is a leading authority in the field of "postmodern alternative chemistry", a science which combines ancient alchemic practice with modern esoteric holistic sciences. He discovered the Library in a happy accident involving several pounds of gunpowder, a gallon of citric acid, and an unfortunate choice of underwear in the summer of 1997 and has been a regular visitor ever since. He is known for his odd manner of speech, extraordinary capabilities for obtaining restricted materials throughout the Known Places, and his odd chemical smell.
To his chagrin, he was killed via falling bookshelf trying to escape from the World Eaters.
Doureuth Kaliet
Klitchzen Doureuth Kaliet. |
---|
Super rich and from Somewhere Else, Klitch Kaliet won't likely speak to you at all unless you've done something extraordinary… or made him angry.
Tyriode Entath
Klitchzen Tyriode Entath. |
---|
An associate of Klitchzen Kaliet, Entath is considerably more approachable, though just as tight lipped about Where he comes from. A fairly friendly fellow, Entath has a weakness for women and a fondness for the nicer things in life. Rumor has it that his work in the Library involves a drug smuggling operation back Home.
Sergei Romanov
Romanov. Date and location unknown. |
---|
Sergei Romanov is known for his fast wit and faster fingers. A master prestidigitalist, or performer of simple stage magics, he visits the library in order to research the most incredible examples of his art. If you ask nicely, he may give you a demonstration of his latest trick. Keep one eye on your wallet, though. Those fast fingers are even better at making other people's coins dissapear.
Whispers suggest Romanov is quite friendly with Library staff, and that it's not uncommon to find him in whispered conversation with a Page. No one is quite certain what he's up to.
Athanasios Rophos Reppt
Rophos posing for a picture. Possibly a year or so old. |
---|
As he's generally wrapped in a fedora and thick threnchcoat, photos of Rophos Reppt in all his glory are rare. Count yourself privileged. Reppt comes from Elsewhere, and works as something very like a detective, known for his ability to seamlessly blend into crowds. He's only brought someone else home with him on two occasions in recent memory.
Reppt is a no nonsense type of guy, and does not take kindly to staring or disrespectful comments. Gain his trust, however, and he's a friendly chap with an excellent sense of humor.
Yesterday Shape-the-sky
Yesterday. |
---|
Mischievous and clever, young Yesterday has been a member of the Library for as long as anyone can remember, though if you ask her it's only been "a week or so". She's intent on some quest, and will do great things for anyone who can help her.
She claims to be from London, and has the west end accent to match, but the place she describes is certainly not London as we know it…
Yesterday is familiar with many forms of machine, and has shown to be highly adept at repairing anything from lawnmowers to spacecraft, the latter of which seems to be considerably important to her goals.
Jonathan "Johnny V." Micheal Vanderbilt
Johnny V, yo. Glorious. |
---|
Jonathan Vanderbilt, AKA "Johnny Victory" was a failed musician in LA who stumbled into the Library after a drug fueled binge. Just stoned enough not to question the place he found himself in, Johnny began to explore, eventually discovering texts describing an apocryphal lost city in the jungles of Brazil. Disillusioned with his previous life and coming down with a bad hangover, Johnny swore off the music business, styled himself an "adventurer at large", and dedicated his life to seeking out the undiscovered city, a quest hampered not at all by the fact that it does not exist.
Johnny is a fan of nearly anything that can be described using the word "extreme". However, as yet he has not caused any major disruptions within the Library, and his actions are viewed with profound patience by Library Staff. He was transformed into a Page for attempting to steal a book, and later killed by the Black Dog.
The Brothers
The Brothers on a rooftop near times square. |
---|
The Brothers live in New York City and keep Watch over the Library entrance near chinatown. They're not actually related, but…
They're never seen outside each other's company, and talk to one another only in short bursts. "this." "yes." him?". That's all they need. They speak to others in turns, and no one's ever been able to persuade them to remove their sunglasses…
Yngwe Atlixcatzan, PhD
Professor Atlixcaxtan delivering a lecture to a graduating class of priests. |
---|
Professor Yngwe Atlixcatzan is an instructor of religious studies and mathematical theory at Saint Popopoyotl Community College in the city of Xochipilli. Nice guy, good at math.
Atlanta Bellen
Atlanta in a Library greenhouse atrium. |
---|
Atlanta seems nice enough. Most people in the Library say she's a wonderful young woman with a bright future ahead of her. Some of the more cautious ones also note that there's a thick layer of dust left wherever she sits, and that staying in her proximity too long causes headaches. Still, she seems kind, and she really loves nature. Especially mushrooms.
She's always in the Library when you arrive, and no one can remember her ever leaving.
Jessie Cartwright
Jessie Cartwright. The photograph was found in the possessions of a missing new guy. |
---|
Jessie Cartwright gives lie to her appearance by actually being extremely friendly. She usually greets newbies after they've been shown around, and offers her help if they need it. Of course, she does have a price, and while you may not pay it, someone will certainly have to. The occasional disappearance linked to her, and the fact that she refuses to talk about her mask or what she can do makes people nervous.
Whatever Jessie is, she's dangerous, and the old-timers make sure the newbies know that.
Vinnie and Belsarius
Vinnie (Left) and Belsarius (Right). |
---|
Vinnie and Belsarius are quiet. That's the first thing everyone mentions. They hardly talk, and when they do talk, it's kind of inane, and usually addressed to empty air. Weather, politics, sports. Stuff that has nothing to do with the conversation nearby. The conversation the next day…
Well. That's a different matter entirely. They seem to hang around the Chicago entrance. Despite the fact that one of them has distinctly been heard to say he lives in California.
Ron Whytecleff
Ron Whytecleff wants you damn kids off his lawn. |
---|
Ron Whytecleff has trouble letting go. He really does. A failed marriage, kids who never call, and an antiques shop in Miami all seem to weigh heavily on the man. He found the Library in 1993, and tends to use it to identify the weirder objects he's given.
Some people say he's been selling artifacts on the side, to some guy named Marshall. Dangerous business, that.
Tom Vilkin
Tom and his amazing mustache. |
---|
Tom Vilkin doesn't know where the door in his basement came from. He does however, love where it goes to. Despite his looks, Tom is a cultured man, and loves reading. A library in his house? He must have pleased someone at some point. In the three years he's been at the Library he's been making remarkable progress at learning magic. Healing spells save him a bundle when it comes to treating his cattle.
Polite, helpful, and always there to ease tempers and make friends, Tom is entirely willing to put people up at his place if they have business that needs to be done in the Dallas area. Just don't scuff the floorboards.
Mark Hargrove
Mark Hargrove: Professional Consultant. |
---|
With two decades of traveling the Outside, Mark Hargrove had the respect of many. Respect, does not equal money. Returning to Vegas made him realize that for all the glory he had seen out There, he came away with almost nothing to show for it. A year or two of depression and a chance encounter with a television commercial gave him an idea, a very profitable idea… Mark now is living large, selling the eldritch secrets he's learned, and the location of hidden treasure troves; all for a cut of the profits.
Mark tends to make his way into the lives of people at the Library after they've got some experience under their belt, but not enough experience to properly read a contract.
Eli Merk
Eli is not extremely pleased to have his picture taken. |
---|
Eli Merk just showed up one day. He won't say how he found the Library, and he won't talk about what he's looking for. Never the less, he's been spending most of his weekends among the stacks. Some say he's trying to find books of power. Others think he's looking for lost treasure.
Whatever the case may be, he's not especially friendly, and he won't stop until he's found what he wants.
The Little Sisters
The Claires |
---|
Three generations of women working within the Hand, with the stated goal of bringing down the SCP Foundation. Claire Lumineux the First is a wily and cunning strategist, always two steps ahead of everyone else. Claire Lumineux the Second is a real spark plug, always eager to incite some civil disobedience. Clair Lumineux the Third is a computer nut, if she can't find it out, it isn't out there. They lead the Little Sisters, a group that acts as a sort of Underground Railroad for people with powers.
Gicicio
Young Gicicio, walking through his kingdom. |
---|
In Kenya, there is an old legend. They say that the land talks to one man out of a generation, and that he unites and leads the tribes. In these times, such things are myth, and no sane man believes them. Gicicio's father was a sane man. When his son talked of hearing the antelope wandering through the grass, and the whispered secrets of the water, he did what a sane man does. He beat his son for lying, and took him to the city, so that he would forget such foolishness. Gicicio went to the city, and the land spoke to him. He saw the gangsters for what they truly were; lions. He saw them stalk and hunt the weak, the foolish, and the elderly. Gicicio saw these things, and the land told him that he could be a lion, that he could be the head of the pack. The land had never lied to him, and Gicicio rose to power, the secrets spoken to him by the land making him take the city, street by street.
Now Gicicio rules his city, growing rich on the tithe each citizen gives him, knowingly or unknowingly. Sometimes strange men come to Gicicio, and ask him questions, for a price. Gicicio will listen, and sometimes he will answer them. Sometimes Gicicio merely cuts them down, and asks the land their questions himself. The leader of the pride can do such things after all. Or so the land tells him.
Never. Ever. Call her a prostitute. |
---|
Desiderata is an escort, and the way she says it makes it clear she means something considerably more interesting than just a high class call girl. She's looking for the name of an ex client who she's fairly certain didn't come from her world, and willing to pay dearly for information.
You probably couldn't pronounce her real name even if you managed to overlook the weird compulsion not to ask questions, but Desiderata's an innnnteresting lady. Men, lesbians, and, oddly, reptillians will find themselves drawn to be as helpful to her as possible.
A Clown Called Ashton Dennis in his home. |
---|
Everyone who sees him knows instantly in their very soul that this man is A Clown Called Ashton. Which would be fine and dandy, if his name were Ashton. A Clown Called Ashton Dennis never wanted to be a clown at all, but Fate is cruel to some…
He wears the makeup, but only because if he doesn't people constantly ask why he isn't.
He died a hero's death, fighting off the World Eaters with a chair in the Cafe.
Bartleby and Nazaire, having wandered into someone's to-do |
---|
Nazaire and Bartleby are cousins, and have known each other for many years. Both are approaching their century mark, and come from very old, well-respected magically-inclined families. They're known to argue back and forth about the principles of various enchantments.
Unlike other wizards in this age, they aren't afraid to venture into the world proper, trusting in their knowledge of modern day culture to keep them inconspicuous.
Poul Garcia
Poul conversing with customers |
---|
Poul Garcia decided that the Library had an open niche, and set up the Café Bücherei in one of the empty Atria. Poul has more than a passing interest in alchemy and magic, and accumulates interesting ingredients.
Marlon
Marlon enjoying a snack in his meadow. |
---|
Marlon is a moose, and a supremely intelligent one at that. At least by the standards one would impose on a moose. Despite never being permitted entry to the library, Marlon has popped in several times after discovering a Way leading inside some years ago. Some say Marlon had been rubbing his antler's against a tree when he discovered the library. Some say it was the other end Marlon was rubbing. In any case, Marlon is a moose in odd circumstances doing the best he can. For one thing he appears to live in an endless meadow devoid of anything but trees, flowers and streams. Every so often Marlon will open his Way and try to tempt some visitors with a trail of flowers left in the doorway. Marlon's a friendly beast, but looking at him, you can't help but feel he's lonely. The more compassionate staff may encourage visits to Marlon, but also advise at being careful of Marlon's flowers. He's rather protective of them. He might just make you a gift of them if he enjoys your company though.
Buddy
Buddy |
---|
What, you don't know who Buddy is? Come on, everyone knows Buddy. If you need something to introduce you around or you have to find someone, just find Buddy. He'll do you right.
Charlie the Guerrilla |
---|
Charlie's a bit of a firebrand in the Hand, believing that this is the time and place for the Revolution of the Different to begin. He's associated with some of the more radical elements of the Hand, and even leads a team of his own for strikes to 'rescue' others from the Foundation, MC&D, or the GOC.
Ronnie |
---|
Ronnie's a new person to the Library, a law student currently from Sacramento. She's new to everything, and always curious as to what's going on in this new world she's found.
