Okay, seeing as I'm the character with the mage, I really ought to help with clarifying things. These are the things that I've noticed about Magic in the world.
Magic isn't as easy or as practical as a skill:
Midnight's telekinetic spells aren't going to let her attack things, or move around anything heavier than she is. Also, her telekinetic 'hands' are about as dexterous as her own paws. Although I haven't tried it, I doubt Midnight can lift herself.
In theory, Midnight can use her magics to attack someone, but honestly it would be much easier for someone else with a gun, since her attacks use Fate Points. So, no fireballs or magic missiles. Someone else is the combat monster, Midnight's there for support or making diversions.
Midnight's healing magics are pretty much even with the Medical Skill, with the advantage that Midnight doesn't need hands or props to work it out. However, the spells seem to be more in the nature of first aid rather than surgery, but that could be due to Midnight needing more skill in that area. And again, a healing spell will need a Fate Point.
Magic can be used to help with another skill:
Gally, Midnight's familiar, is an undead abomination. Walking around with a kid's corpse on a unicycle will attract unwanted attention. Fortunately, Gally can stealth himself, and Midnight's magics can aid in that so he can move around unseen. At this point, I'm thinking Midnight's probably woven an enchantment over Gally so he won't attract attention from other people.
So, here's a question. Can Midnight do this to other people? Since Mann's using a lot from the Dresden Files, I'm thinking that it's possible for Midnight to charge someone with a situational modifier in her areas of magic. Again, that would probably cost a fate point, and be a one-shot item, but that could prove useful.
Magical Conflicts:
The battle with Gally in the Circus was with Midnight using her magic to track Gally down and capture him. There, Midnight was using her highest Magic skill against Gally's Magical Class in a contested roll. I'm sure there will be situational modifiers for that, should Midnight be prepared by making the various circles and abjurations. But it's interesting to note.
Gally has also suggested when it's time to hunt the Black Dog that Midnight prepare a layered pentagram in order to protect them. That does give a good idea, which may come into play.
Okay… my thoughts are down, and I'll be adding to this as time goes. Hurray for observations!
